Art Assignment
This portion of the unit provides you with the opportunity to express your thoughts and ideas about the themes in To Kill A Mockingbird through non-written expression. The evaluation of your work will consider the facts that this is not an art class and that there will be a broad variety of artistic experience and ability in the class. Basically, I want to see a sincere and thoughtful effort- I am not expecting a museum quality piece from each of you.
Your assignment will be to create one piece of artwork to be turned in with your portfolio at the end of the unit. Here are the requirements for this assignment:
If you choose a form of expression that does not lend well to inclusion on a portfolio please let me know. There are other options. This could be the case for any medium. If you want to create an image to represent your Expression assignment in your portfolio you can bring in your work a few days before the due date and we will take and print a digital picture of your piece. This photo can then be included in your portfolio.
Evaluations will be based on two components: I completely understand that artistic quality is subjective to skill and experience. So, similar to your Role Play piece, a sincere effort is needed to successfully complete this portion of the unit. Anything less than a sincere effort to both identify and express any idea or motivation from the text through the medium of your choosing will receive reduced points. Your brief description can be used to clearly identify the connection between your artistic expression and an idea from the text.
To get you started, the following is a sample of the various posters that were designed for movie house lobbies during the film's original release:
- The medium that you choose is completely up to you. Feel free to draw, paint, sculpt, create a dance, or write a song. Take advantage of this flexibility to explore and find a unique way to express your ideas. If you choose to create a performance piece (such as dance or a song) YOU MUST TALK TO ME FIRST so that we can negotiate the presentation and evaluation of your work. BE WARNED: If you do not talk with me and bring in a performance piece at the end of the unit you will run serious risk of not receiving credit for your work.
- Your piece needs to be titled.
- In addition, your portfolio must include a brief description of how your piece represents an idea taken from To Kill A Mockingbird. This description need only be a few sentences in length.
- If possible, include a photo of your art with your project description in your portfolio
